What is Reading is Magic?

My name is Ashley, and I’m a huge fan of science fiction and fantasy books. I’ve been reading them since I was in middle school — well, actually since my 4th grade teacher read The Hobbit to my class!

For the past several years, I’ve been writing for a personal website about sci-fi, fantasy, and video games (another passion of mine) at Robo♥beat. While I still write there on a more personal level, I’ve been wanting to branch out. I’m currently getting ready to become a teacher, so my world is filled with education. I tutor part-time, read education books, volunteer in a middle school English classroom, and watch videos from teachers to learn all that I can about education as I prepare for this new career.

As I thought about my new direction for writing, I reflected on why I’m becoming a teacher. Besides my passion for working with young people, my biggest reason for teaching English specifically is simple: I love reading. And I want to encourage young people to read, as my early teachers did! The problem for some kids is that they’re pushed to read things they aren’t interested in, which makes reading feel like a chore. (I’m sure we’ve all been there, too — I have!)

So what’s the key that unlocks a lifelong love of reading for most kids? I believe it’s simply finding the right book! That’s why I decided to share my favorite genres, science fiction and fantasy… but with books that just about anyone can read, including middle school and high school students trying to find a book that clicks with them.

Here on Reading is Magic, I share book reviews and recommendations for middle grade and YA fantasy and sci-fi. I’ll also share teacher resources and tips as I find new ideas for how to share these genres in the classroom.

But this website isn’t just for educators and young readers — it’s for anyone who loves reading science fiction and fantasy. If you’re an adult who enjoys the occasional YA read (or if it’s your favorite genre!), this is the place for you. You can visit the site for regular bookish blog posts, or join us on Goodreads to find more reading ideas.

Whoever you are, I’m so happy you’re here. Thanks for taking the time to add a little magic to your library!
